The Opportunity

The City of St. Albert is recruiting individuals to join our Recreation and Parks department as a Lifeguard 2.

As a Lifeguard 2 you will act in the capacity of shift supervisor, leading other lifeguard staff as you ensure the safety and supervision of patrons at Fountain Park Recreation Centre, Landrex Water Play Centre and Grosvenor Outdoor Pool. Your duties include monitoring activities of the swimming pools while emphasizing the prevention of accidents and injuries. You will maintain order and ensure proper conduct of persons using the facilities, react to emergency situations and perform first aid and emergency aid when required. You will also maintain a safe and clean environment by completing daily operations checks, cleaning the pool and locker room areas and performing basic mechanical and operational tasks and tests.

This position involves a lot of interaction with the public so applicants must have strong interpersonal and communications skills, and a commitment to delivering great service. Qualifications

• Applicants will hold a current National Lifeguard award combined with intermediate first aid, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and Oxygen Administration.
• Pool Operator 1 certification is required; proof of registration or completion of course within 12 months of being hired will suffice.
• Supervisory experience combined with 1000 aquatic hours.
• Any additional aquatic experience & training is certainly an asset.
• Lifeguards must be able to communicate effectively so we are looking for candidates with strong verbal communication and listening skills.
• Public relations are a key aspect of this role so the ability to be firm and tactful when educating patrons on policies and procedures and to respond calmly to emergencies is essential.

Hours of Work

The number of hours worked per week fluctuates on an as-needed basis due to operational requirements and may be scheduled in advance where possible. Staff are required to be available to work a minimum of 12-15 hours per week within their designation availability. The weekly hour requirement may fluctuate between the various schedule-sessions. Casual Lifeguard shifts are a minimum of 3 hours and up to 8 hours.

Specifically, we seek individuals who are available to work the following days and times:
• Daytime positions (Monday - Friday 4:45 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.)
• Weeknight positions (Monday-Friday 4:00 p.m. - 10:45 p.m.) and weekend (Saturday-Sunday 5:15 a.m. - 9:45 p.m.)

Please note facility placement will be determined upon hiring.

Compensation

$26.40 - $32.11 per hour based on qualifications and experience.

Conditions of Employment

• Successful candidates will be required to obtain/maintain a clear vulnerable sector police information check.
• The successful candidate will be required to provide proof of educational and professional credentials.
