Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (as of application date)
• Currently registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics as an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) or currently enrolled as a 2nd year Advanced Care Paramedic student. Preference may be given to those eligible to write the Advanced Care Paramedic Provincial Registration Examination in 2025.

Additional Requirements
Valid Alberta Class 4 Driver’s Licence: You must provide a driver’s abstract demonstrating safe driving behaviour (six demerits or fewer) upon offer.
Clear Vulnerable Sector Police Information Check: Must be successfully obtained and maintained upon offer of employment.
Physical and Medical Standards Compliance: Ability to meet physical and medical standards, including vision and hearing, as per NFPA guidelines. Please refer to NFPA 1582, Chapter 6 – Medical Evaluations of Candidates, for details on disqualifying medical conditions.
Preferred Qualification: Preference may be given to applicants with NFPA 1001 Level I and II certifications.

Please note:
• A valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s licence and Air Brake (Q) endorsement are conditions of employment that must be obtained within the probationary period, at the candidate’s expense.
• Candidates who have not successfully completed the U of A test will not automatically be removed from the competition and may be hired on the condition that the test is completed within one year of their start date.
• Candidates who have not successfully passed the Alberta Firefighter Physical Aptitude Evaluation at the time of hire will be assigned to EMS-only duties until they successfully pass the test and complete Fire Training.
• In these cases, candidates’ probationary periods may be extended until both the U of A test and Fire Training are successfully completed. If the probationary period is extended beyond the standard 12 months, candidates will still be eligible for salary progression after 12 months of employment. Seniority within the bargaining unit may also be impacted by the timing of U of A test completion and attendance at regularly scheduled Fire Training.

Recruitment Process and Timeline
Application period (March 3 – March 24, 2025)
Station Assessment Includes Firefighter Aptitude, Medical Knowledge, OSCE and Job Skills Assessments (April 7, 9, or 11, 2025)
Firefighter Physical Fitness Test conducted by the University of Alberta. This test is a pass-fail test where the candidate will go through a treadmill test followed by 6 stations that simulate tasks that firefighters are required to perform on the job. Candidates must register for an open testing session, through the U of A. The next known open enrollment period is in May 2025. For previously successful completions of this test to be considered valid for this competition it must have been achieved after September 1, 2024.
Candidates who have not successfully completed the U of A test will not automatically be removed from the competition and may still be hired on a condition where the test will need to be completed within one year of their start date.
