The Opportunity:

If you are new to the industry, or a recent graduate, this could be an excellent opportunity for you. The City of St. Albert Transit department is hiring a Transit Operations Coordinator to plan and manage day-to-day transit operations to ensure delivery of safe, reliable and efficiently scheduled services to our customers. The Coordinator will also be responsible for implementing transit technologies and developing efficient processes for service delivery. This will involve using existing and future data to assemble and analyze the performance and utilization of the public transit service and making recommendations for alternative service delivery options.

The work requires the development of a thorough knowledge of public transportation planning and operations, service delivery in conventional transit, and knowledge of project management and information systems. But most importantly, the Coordinator must have an advanced skill set in the use of technology and software applications, and be adept at applying these skills in a manner that can capably support the systems that form the heart of the transit operation.

The Coordinator will take on a wide variety of duties as can be expected in a medium-sized transit operation – duties that include schedule development, research, analysis, problem-solving, and system modification. The duties will also take you out of the office to review real-time operation, identify and react to route disruptions (detours, construction, etc.), and prepare new areas for service. Applicants should enjoy working in a fast paced and constantly changing environment; have excellent written and interpersonal communication skills and a commitment to quality customer service.


The ideal candidate should have an enthusiasm for public transportation and the role it plays in a community. Ideally, the candidate would possess a post-secondary degree in engineering, planning, geography, transportation systems and technology, or other relate field. Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years related experience. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in public transit administration or operations, scheduling, project management, customer service, research, analysis, and report writing.

A Professional designation would also be considered an asset. The preferred candidate should have thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite with strong emphasis on Microsoft Excel. Experience in Hastus scheduling software, GTFS databases, mapping programs (i.e. ArcGIS), and GIS/AVL would be an asset. A valid Alberta driver’s licence is required for this position.

Candidates not meeting the full qualifications of the position may be considered at a lower classification until they meet the full qualifications of the position.

Hours of Work:

This position will work a compressed schedule of 72 hours bi-weekly (Monday - Friday, 8:00 – 5:00 with a regular day off [RDO] every two weeks). There will be occasional requirements to work a flexible schedule to accommodate system observation tasks or other field assignments.


$75,985 - $93,520 per annum. In addition, the City of St. Albert offers a generous and comprehensive benefit package.
